Hawaiian legend says that Haleakala is where the demigod Maui lassoed the sun, slowing its passage so people had more time to grow food. It is a massive dormant shield volcano that last erupted in about 1500 and left behind these cinder cones and ancient lava flows. It is truly a sight to behold.
